But how much does it cost to fly into outer space?
How Much Does It Cost?
So how much does it actually cost to book a flight with Virgin and fly into space? Well as you can imagine it is a little more expensive than your average airplane flight. Tickets start at $200,000 or around £120,000. The company have stated that they hope to soon reduce costs and their prices should not stay so high. But the fact is clear that travelling into outer space does not come cheap.
So far there have been a few hundred people sign up for the experience. But as word spreads of this incredible business venture there is little doubt that more and more people will want in on it. It is surprisingly easy to book tickets. There are dedicated space travel agents all over the world that Virgin are working closely with to sell tickets. Or you can simply book through Virgin Galactic.
Obviously something like this is only really for the very wealthy at this stage, but as Virgin Galactic expand their business model they hope to drive down prices so that more and more people can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
The Outer Space Experience
So what will you get for your money? Well to be honest not all that much. You can read the brochure which tells you how wonderful and peaceful it is in outer space and how thrilling the lack of gravity is, but in the real world you only experience all that for around twenty minutes. The whole experience lasts a few days. You travel to the Virgin Galactic space centre which is located in New Mexico, there you receive a few days of training and preparation to fully equip you for what lies ahead.
Then on your big day you are strapped in and shot into outer space and three times the speed of sound. The actual ride is said to be quite dramatic, as you can image climbing to 50,000 feet takes some doing, so you have some pretty loud jet engines propelling you up there. Once you reach 50,000 feet, the jet engines switch off and you are then detached from the main vessel. Now your smaller vessel takes you much further to a distance of around 300,000 feet. Now you experience the most incredible silence you will ever hear, or not hear more to the point. You also experience complete weightlessness as gravity has gone. You can look down on the earth from up high and experience a view only a hand full of people have had the opportunity to see. Then you strap back in and shoot back down into the earth’s atmosphere.
As you can imagine this will be a pretty awe-inspiring trip. But is it really worth the money? Some people obviously think that it is as bookings are being made all the time, but for the average Joe the price of outer space travel is just simply to high. Maybe in the years to come Virgin Galactic will be able to lower their prices and get more and more people to experience the thrill of going into outer space.
